How Is Overtime Calculated in Saudi Arabia?
Under Article 107 of the Saudi Labour Law, an employer must pay a worker overtime compensation equal to the worker’s normal hourly wage plus 50% of their basic hourly wage for every extra hour worked. This is not simply “1.5 × basic hourly wage” — the actual (total) hourly wage is used as the base, and only the additional 50% premium is calculated on the basic wage.
Total Overtime Pay = Overtime Hourly Rate × Overtime Hours
Overtime Calculation Example
Consider a worker with a basic monthly salary of SAR 4,000 and an actual monthly wage of SAR 6,000, using the standard 8 hours/day and 30 days/month convention:
What Counts as Overtime in Saudi Arabia?
Overtime generally refers to hours worked beyond the standard daily or weekly working-hour limit set for the role. Hours worked on official holidays and public vacations are also treated as overtime under Article 107, regardless of whether the employee’s normal daily quota has been reached.
Regular workday overtime
Hours worked beyond the standard working day, commonly 8 hours.
Weekly‑hours overtime
Hours worked beyond the standard working week, commonly 48 hours, for establishments that schedule on a weekly basis.
Public holidays & official vacations
Any hours worked during official holidays or vacations are considered overtime under Article 107.
Exemptions & special roles
Certain occupations, contracts or exemption categories may be treated differently. Confirm your specific case with HR or HRSD.
Working Hours in Saudi Arabia
Standard working hours in Saudi Arabia are commonly structured as 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. Hours worked beyond this threshold are generally treated as overtime, subject to the specific working-hour arrangement, occupation and contract terms that apply to the employee.
Overtime During Public Holidays
Working hours performed during official public holidays and vacations are considered overtime under Article 107 of the Saudi Labour Law, and compensated using the overtime formula above (or, with the worker’s consent, with equivalent paid time off).
Overtime During Ramadan
Working-hour rules may differ during the holy month of Ramadan for Muslim employees, with reduced daily/weekly hour limits commonly applied. Because this affects what counts as “normal hours” versus overtime, it’s worth confirming the specific Ramadan working-hour policy with your employer or HRSD before comparing figures.
Basic Salary vs Actual Wage
Basic salary is the fixed base amount set out in your employment contract. Actual (or total) wage is the full monthly wage used in the overtime calculation, which may include the basic salary plus relevant recurring wage components or allowances depending on your contract and the rules that apply to your role. This is why the calculator asks for both figures separately — using only the basic salary for both parts of the formula can understate your overtime pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is overtime calculated in Saudi Arabia?
Overtime is calculated as the actual hourly wage plus 50% of the basic hourly wage, multiplied by the number of overtime hours worked, in line with Article 107 of the Saudi Labour Law.
What is the overtime rate in Saudi Arabia?
There isn’t a single flat multiplier. The overtime hourly rate equals your actual hourly wage plus half of your basic hourly wage — the exact rate in SAR depends on your individual basic salary and actual wage.
Is overtime based on basic salary or total salary?
Both. The actual (total) hourly wage forms the base of the calculation, and an additional 50% premium is calculated on the basic hourly wage only.
How do I calculate overtime from a monthly salary?
Divide the monthly amount by the salary calculation days (commonly 30) and then by daily working hours (commonly 8) to get an hourly figure, then apply the overtime formula. This calculator does that automatically.
Are public holidays counted as overtime?
Yes. Hours worked during official public holidays and vacations are treated as overtime under Article 107.
How is Friday/weekend work treated?
Hours worked beyond your normal scheduled hours on a rest day are generally treated in line with the applicable overtime and rest-day rules for your contract — confirm the specifics with HR or HRSD for your situation.
How many working hours are allowed in Saudi Arabia?
The commonly applied standard is 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week, with some occupations and arrangements subject to different limits.
How does Ramadan affect working hours?
Muslim employees are commonly entitled to reduced daily/weekly working hours during Ramadan. This can change what counts as “normal” hours versus overtime — check your employer’s Ramadan schedule.
Can overtime be compensated with paid leave?
With the worker’s consent, an employer may compensate overtime hours with equivalent paid compensatory leave instead of a monetary payment.
Does overtime apply to every employee?
Not necessarily — certain occupations, executive roles or specific exemption categories may be treated differently under the applicable regulations. This calculator applies the general formula and should not be treated as a determination of your specific eligibility.
What is Article 107 of Saudi Labour Law?
Article 107 is the provision of the Saudi Labour Law that sets out how overtime hours — including hours worked on official holidays — must be compensated.
Can I calculate overtime if I only know my basic salary?
Yes — tick “My actual wage is the same as my basic salary” in the calculator and it will use your basic salary for both parts of the formula. Keep in mind this may understate your overtime pay if your actual wage includes allowances.
